Naturopathic Medicine seeks to address why illness is happening and to optimize the function of the body for long-term health. It is individualized healthcare using safe, gentle, and effective natural treatment including clinical nutrition, lifestyle counselling, nutritional and botanical supplements, and acupuncture.

Licensed Naturopathic Doctors have a broad scope of practice: they can diagnose disease, order lab tests and perform physical exams. They work with individuals looking for health optimization, disease prevention, symptom or side effect management, guidance on vitamins and supplements, and alternatives to current medications. Education and accountability is emphasized, empowering patients to understand and participate in their health journey.

Janine Buisman Wilcox is a Naturopathic Doctor, Guelph local, and Mom of three young kids. She is passionate about helping her patients get to the root of their health challenges so they have energy to enjoy life. She truly believes that health brings happiness. When we feel great, we can accomplish the things we want to in our school, work, family, friendships, and personal lives. When we feel poorly, the simple tasks of daily living can be a challenge. She understands that life is busy, and information online is confusing, so she works hard to guide her patients through that to a place where they are enjoying life and feeling good in their body: waking refreshed, managing stress, feeling nourished and energized, digesting well, experiencing mental clarity and happiness, and moving without pain.

Her approach is to keep things simple and meet patients where they are at in terms of their goals, circumstances and motivation. Some patients are ready for big lifestyle overhauls, but for most, it is small changes that they can continue for the rest of their lives. Being a parent is TOUGH- the to do list is long and the worries are high, they last thing she wants to do is to make life more stressful.

When she meets a patient, Janine takes a very thorough health history to understand what the root causes of the concerns are: whether it’s hormones, a damaged digestive system, bacterial/yeast imbalance, food sensitivities, stress, weak liver function, immune system dysfunction, etc. She educates her patients so they understand what they are working towards and feel empowered to take their health into their own hands. Together they implement feasible dietary and lifestyle changes. She prescribes high quality herbal and nutrient supplements that are clinically proven as being effective for treating the condition or deficiency at hand. She uses acupuncture for some patients as a way to reduce pain, balance hormones, decrease stress, promote sleep and mental well-being, and provide relaxation. As a practitioner, she is constantly learning and researching to ensure that she is aware of the latest research and best practices in the field.

Janine studied Kinesiology at McMaster University before pursuing studies at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, a four year program which she completed over six years while having her kids. While she enjoys seeing patients with many different concerns, she is particularly excited about treating kids and their families - setting them up with the tools for lifelong wellness. She is also passionate about women’s health. She loves to help women regulate their hormones at all stages of life, whether trying to get pregnant, supporting pregnancy or postpartum, or dealing with the hormonal fluctuations of menopause.

Janine was born-and raised in Guelph and fits the stereotype well as a baby-wearing, barefoot outdoor-loving type. She loves to spend time with her kids at various parks and coffee shops in the Downtown area, hang out in her yard with friends, and play a good boardgame. Life feels a little crazy sometimes, but these things are fun! Janine is proud of the Guelph community and loves contributing to it and improving patients’ lives with her knowledge and passion.
